Friday Five! {5 songs that pump me up!}

Good morning! Happy Friday to you! Today started with a bang for me, dropping fresh coffee all over my hand.  If you know me, you know how serious I am about coffee… so the burn on my hand wasn’t nearly as upsetting as the wasting of the coffee.  *sad face*  But!!  There will always be another cup! 🙂

The topic of today’s Friday Five is “5 songs that pump up your workout”.  (Considering I change my playlist monthly, this should be fun!!)  As per the usual, I’m linking up with my girls from the DC TRIFECTA; Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run.

  1. Ginza” by J Balvin.   There’s something about this song that makes it impossible to sit still.  Even right now (yes, I’m currently listening to it) I want to get up and dance.
  2. Plakito” by Yandel.  This is another one that makes every cell in my body start to shake it.  As I was coming up mile 11 at the Chuck12, I put this song on so I could finish strong.  (see the phone in my hand, up by my ear? Yea, I’m listening to this song)chuck12
  3. Another Heart” by Tremonti.  This song has a steady cadence that matches my speed.  I find myself tapping along with the drums every time I hear it.  Which is PERFECT when I’m running and need to push forward.  Songs with memorable drum parts are extremely effective when trying to keep momentum.
  4. Daughter of Darkness” by Halestorm.  Remember that whole drum thing I mentioned?  Driving forward, the whole time.  Also, there’s an awesome little meter change about 2:15 in.  Love love love that!!
  5. Whatever Makes You Happy“, Empire soundtrack.  First off, Jennifer Hudson?  Get it girl.  Her voice is infectious.  It makes me smile.  When I’m running hard and the LAST thing I want to do is smile, this song forces one of out me  🙂 (side note, is it September 23rd yet?!!! – can NOT wait until season 2!)

Friday Five!! 5 things that get me to the finish line! #runbaltimore

Happy Friday!! Even though this week was a short one, I’m so happy its over!  Waking up on a Friday sets my mood to “Happy”. 🙂  I’m linking up with my girls from the DC trifecta today, Courtney of Eat Pray Run DC, Mar of Mar on the Run and Cynthia of You Signed Up for What?!.  We have a free Friday today (no theme), so I’m going to talk about the 5 things that get me to the finish line.  Because I have been running a WIDE range of distances the last two weeks, some will be long distance specific, some will be shorter.

  1. My Garmin Forerunner 620 garmin_620_white-orange_l-550x400I’ve only had my Garmin since May, and I’m pretty much obsessed.  If I happen to forget to put it on after my shower, I feel completely naked.  (even right now as its charging, my wrist feels… weird)  This little watch is amazing!  I’m not a fast runner by any stretch of the imagination.  Being able to track my pace just by looking at my wrist makes me feel fast.  Don’t laugh too hard at this, please… On Wednesday, my father and I ran the Ravens5K.  My dad is quick, but I felt pretty strong, so I kept pace with him for a while.  I looked down at my Garmin because I started to have some shin pain.  We were running a 9:30 mile.  (remember that part where I said I wasn’t fast!)  I knew I could keep that pace for the remainder of the mile, but I also knew that if I did, my next two would suffer tremendously.  I told my Dad to run ahead without me, and I slowed my pace about a minute.  If I hadn’t had my trusty Garmin, that wouldn’t have been doable.  Yes, I could have just guessed pace, but I like to see how fast/slow I’m running.
  2. My Brooks Ghost 7’s brooks-ghost-7-womensI cant say enough about these shoes.  After my huge fail at the Baltimore Marathon with shoes, it was imperative that I find a pair that not only fit correctly, but were comfortable!  After a visit to Charm City Run, and a ton of choices laid out in front of me, I believe I’ve found my shoe “solemate”.  I could (and have) fall(en) asleep in my Brooks.  When I put these on, it feels like small pillows under the arches of your feet which as a person who has stupid sensitive feet to begin with, is a welcome feeling.  Except for OCR’s and Fun runs (like the color run that is incredibly messy) you will always find me running/and walking in these.  (side note, I also LOVE the “Run Happy” that goes along with Brooks.)
  3. Music Music-image-music-36556275-1680-1050This is long run specific.  I no longer run with headphones on my short runs because I’d rather use that time to think.  Also, the sound of my feet, and the runners around me tend to give me the same push that my “power” songs do on long runs.  I’ve also run two longer distances sans headphones.  My half marathon training run on the NCR was without music, and I forgot my headphones for the Chuck12, soooooo that was also without music.  However, I plan to use my tunes on my long run this weekend so I’m able to turn my mind off.  (one headphone out of course!)
  4. Nuun Nuun-I-heart-2– again, this is long run specific.  I haven’t found anything comparable to Nuun as far as hydration on long runs.  I never feel dehydrated, and Nuun doesn’t make my stomach hurt – both HUGE things!! I’ve gotten much better at hydrating after nearly passing out on one of my mid distance runs this summer.  Holy humid batman! I realized as I finished that I was drenched in sweat, and I didn’t have to pee.  I was also insanely dizzy and was getting a pretty fierce headache.  These things (pre previous experience) could have been avoided had I better hydrated.  I got back to my car and chugged an entire bottle of Nuun (watermelon – delicious!) that I had waiting for me. My go to flavors are fruit Punch, Watermelon, and the Cherry Limeade Energy. If you’re a Nuun virgin, I definitely recommend giving it a try.
  5. My thoughts Listen-to-Your-Thoughts-Cropped yea, that sounds weird.  Especially because my brain can also be the reason I want to stop running.  On short runs, I think about the people around me, the scenery, my IRUN4 buddy, and my son. On longer runs, I have a little game I play calls “how much is left?”  On my 13.1 mile training run, I was not feeling it… at all.  I knew I needed to complete the distance, but my feet had other plans.  So, I began to think mathematically.  I ran a 6.55 down and back. (again, thanks to the Garmin i was able to track this obscure distance)  At mile 4(ish) I said to myself “you’re over half way to the turn around, just keep moving”.  At mile 10, I told myself “only a 5k left!! That’s easy! DO.NOT.STOP”.  I also like to keep track of my “kills” (Ragnar terminology) when I’m running alone.  It doubles as motivation, and security because I know I’m not the only runner on the trail.  It’s a bit more difficult to do this in a race setting (unless its small) because I’m passing people right and left (all while being passed myself!).    Although, I’m guilty of the last minute kick, passing someone at the finish.  Being that I will (most likely) NEVER place at an event, let alone WIN the thing… I don’t feel bad trying to shave a few seconds off my time by hauling towards the finish.

Friday five: My 5 most anticipated Fall Races!!

Happy first Friday in September!!! I’m so excited it’s almost Fall!! My favorite season for so many reasons! Today I’ll talk about one of those amazing reasons…. RACES!!! Fall running is my favorite kind of running!! The temperature is perfect, the bugs are leaving (of they aren’t already gone), and the scenery is more beautiful to run in.  I’m linking up with my girls from the DCTrifecta as per the usual – MarCynthia and Courtney to talk about the 5 races that stand out for me. for this season! (yes, I’m running A LOT more than 5 races this fall!!)

1. Ragnar DC – I’m so excited to be running this again!  Last year was amazing. The race, the experience, the friends made.  If you’ve never run a Ragnar, i DEFINITELY suggest it.  12 people, 2 vans, 200 miles, and an UNFORGETTABLE time! (sleep is overrated) 🙂

image1 (3)2. Baltimore Full – this is my second time running the full. For me, this is a come back race.  Last year (my first marathon ever)  I was dreadfully unprepared.  I had the wrong shoes, my hydration was sub par, and I was battling a knee injury.  This year I take back Baltimore.  Also – it’s the 15th anniversary, so the medal is AMAZING!  This will be part 3 or 3 for the King Crab Challenge, so I get two medals at the finish line. 😉 (i love bling!)

3. Patapsco Valley 50k – my VERY first Ultra!! I’m scared out of my mind…. no joke.  However, a phrase I’ve been       swearing by lately says “on the other side of fear is freedom”, so I’m facing this fear head on.  Also, after conquering this 50k, I’ll qualify for Marathon Maniacs – another thing pushing me. 🙂 Check out this elevation chart… I’ll need all the push I can get!

4. 10k Across the Bay – I’ve only heard amazing things about this race, so when my father mentioned wanting to run it I couldn’t have hit “register” fast enough!  This race will be the final race he and I run together this season.

5. NCR Trail Marathon – this is my last race of the year, and my 3rd full marathon.  I was fortunate enough to be selected as an ambassador for this race (one of 5 total!!) so my entry was free!! Always nice right?? 🙂 The NCR is my stomping ground, where I run ALL of my long training runs.  So excited to “race” on the trail!!

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!  Also, long time no see!!  I apologize for being MIA, but life kinda happened!  So, today I’m going to briefly talk about my top 5 brands right now. 🙂 Considering I’ll be using all 5 (most likely) on my race tomorrow, this shouldn’t be a difficult entry for me to write at all!!  I’m running the Sole of the City 10K tomorrow with roughly 3000 of my closest buddies in (IMO) the greatest city in America, BALTIMORE!!! 🙂 I’m pretty excited.  Second time running. 😉  As per the usual for TODAY though (let me not get too ahead of myself), I’m linking up with my three favorite blogger Ladies, Courtney,  Cynthia and Mar for the Friday Five.

  1. Oiselle. This shouldn’t come as a hug surprise, lol.  As soon as I joined the flock, I was hooked!!! The clothing is absolutely (without a doubt) the most comfortable and versatile I’ve ever come in counter with when it comes to running.  I plan to rock the Verrazano Bra, the Scantron Tank (tagged with novemberproject love – obviously), and because its frowned upon to run around with your tush hanging out, I’m rocking my Roga Short.  Cute yea?? I’m stoked!!
  2. Brooks. After the fiasco with my Marathon “too small shoe” experience, I went to my favorite running store CharmCityRun and got a pair of the most amazing shoes I’ve ever put on my feet!! Brooks Ghost 7.  They feel like I’m running on air!! No squishing my toes (BONUS!!) and no pinching the sides of my feet. I’m really excited for the second official race of 2015 in these bad boys!!  *side bar* my first race of the season, the Kelly Shamrock 5k, running thiese shoes, got me a shiney new 5k PR! w00t!! 😉
  3. Feetures Socks.  HUGE Fan!! As a woman who is prone to every foot/toe injury up to and including blisters, these are LIVESAVERS!!  I’m an advocate for the High Performance, Ultra Light, No show tab. (mouth full much?! WOAH!) *directly from the site* – Our High Perfomance socks hug your feet, prevent blisters and keep feet dry and comfortable all day long.  This statement note only is true, it’s the reason I keep coming back.  I’m cheap… like.. insanely cheap, BUT, I’ll pay $11.99 for ONE pair (cringe) of socks, because they keep my feet from turning to complete trash after a long run.
  4. Acure Dry Shampoo. I received a free sample of this amazing stuff as an Ramblen Ambassador.  I can’t say enough.  It’s perfect for last minute, running out the door, “oh my goodness, my hairs a hot mess!!!”  moments, which I’m not proud to say, I’ve been having more then not recently.  It smells excellent, and makes me hair feel smooth and clean until I can get home and jump in the shower!  When the sample runs out, I WILL be getting more.
  5. Procompression/BioSkin.  I can’t stress enough to compress.  My legs wouldn’t be the way they are today without the epic socks from Procompression and the calf sleeves from BioSkin.  I LIVE in compression, at least three days a week you’ll see my legs in some type of compression due to tightness or injury, or whatever!! I LOVE it!!!

Oh oh!!! Also, the 15th, in addition to being the two year anniversary of Boston, was my 2 year runiversary.  Out of tragedy, I took my first steps to a new life, a new life or running, to freedom.  I wouldn’t change anything (about MY part of that). I’m dreaming of a NOT WHITE Spring today…  ya know, being the first day of Spring… having such an epic weather week last week, and waking up to SNOW ALL OVER THE GROUND… makes me quite an unhappy camper.   To say I’m not happy is the understatement of the CENTURY!!! I’m more over snow this year then I think I’ve ever been in my adult life.  Mother nature *knocks loudly* Please GET.IT.TOGETHER!!! *hops of soap box*

Ok! So! I’m back on the wagon (hopefully) and I’m jumping in with my girls at the DC Trifecta Cynthia, Courtney and Mar @ You Signed UpEat Pray Run, DC and Mar on the Run respectively. 🙂 This weeks theme is “THINK SPRING!!!” Which I’m trying… oh LORD I’m trying… to do.  So, here we go!!

Here are five things I’m looking forward to for the Spring time!!! (lets turn this bitter mamabear face into a smile!!!) *fingers crossed*

1. BASEBALL!!!  Orioles opening day is April 10th and I’m looking forward to this SOOOO much so!! It’s later this year by 10 days, so hopefully the weather will be a bit less windy and chilly. If not, NBD!! I’ll still be at one of my favorite places (OPACY) watching the O’s play, drinking extremely over prices beer, in a field of orange. Yep, sounds a bit life heaven.

2. The smells – Let me explain (Kevin Hart much?) Anyway… everything smells amazing in the Spring. The grass, the beautiful flowers, the trees are blooming (which smell good), the air even smells different.  Everything seams to smell better in the spring.  This might only be me, and that’s TOTALLY acceptable, I even think some fresh fruit smells better in spring time. Weird? eh, whatevs! I’m ok with it!! So, bring on the aromatic amazingness!

3. Being able to run OFF the treadmill! Small victory, yes.  But for someone who is in a bit of a running slump, this is HUGE!!! I dread every TM run.  All of them. And for this reason, running has taken the back burner to my core workouts. (you really think I STOPPED workout out?? *psssh* you silly!)  I feel like I’ve been neglecting a passion of mine because of how much I loathe the treadmill! Also, it’s not mine. I have to go to me apt complex gym (not a big deal, it’s 0.1 miles away) to use it, and then I’m not alone… so there’s always the chance of Sir Creeps-a-lot showing up all leery and uncomfortable, which causes me to cut the run short.  The warmer weather (that I HOPE to see soon) will make for outdoor runs! YAY!!!

4. Longer days which mean more time to play with Alex outside!! This kid has a MEAN curve ball!! I love playing catch with him! He’s getting better very quickly… so quickly, that I’m starting to think I need to get him into little man baseball (can you tell I’m new at this??) rather soon.  He hits pretty well also! So, longer days allows Mamabear to get home from working ridiculous hours… and still get to spend quality time with my handsome little dude!! Win Win!!! ❤

5. SPRING CLOTHES!!! Brighter colors, less clothing all together, and lighter fabrics!! YES, YES, and HELL YES!!! So excited to finally pull out the capris, the tank tops, the flip flops, and the sun dresses.  I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to WEAR any of this stuff, but gosh darnit, ITS COMING OUT OF STORAGE!!! 😉 Too excited to keep it away any longer!!! No more boots, and heavy, crazy, stuff!!

Hey it’s Friday!! You know what that means! #FridayFive ABOUT ME! w/ @EatPrayRunDC, @YouSignedUp, and @Marmaone1

Well hello stranger!! I promise I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth… really.  I’ve been inundated with crap these past few weeks!! It’s just… yea.  But I’m here!! And I’m excited to share with you guys 5 things that I (hopefully) haven’t shared already about myself!! I’m linking up with the DC Trifecta  Eat Pray Run DC, Mar on the Run, and You Signed up for What?! for this awesome edition of FRIDAY FIVE!!! YAY! 🙂

1. I’m a beach body coach! (This is pretty cool because it JUST happened!)  I took the leap and became a coach.  It’s actually pretty neat! I’m meeting amazing new people, I get to help people achieve fitness goals, and because I started a program when I became a coach, I’m feeling TONS better about myself.  (always a plus right?)

2. I LOVE to cook.  Yea, I do.  And recently I’ve been able to explore my love for it.  I’ve been creating (simple… don’t get me wrong, lol) meals that I’m proud of… FROM SCRATCH!!  This is awesome! Why??  I wasn’t able to do this in the place I was living before… why?  Well, lets just say I was limited.  For me to be able to experiment with food, for me to make things that people like, and ask for more, fills my heart with joy. 🙂

3. I really enjoy writing.  I’ve been keeping a Journal since the beginning of the year and every time I sit down to write, I find myself losing… myself (wow) in the entries.  So much so, that some nights I’m up until 1am just writing!  I used to write silly little fiction in high school, but stopped as soon as I graduated.  This journal has given me a tiny little interest in picking that up again! Maybe? We’ll see!

4. I’m learning to embrace failure.  Yep, I said it.  Sometimes I suck… but!!!! (big but) That’s ok!!! Sucking, means room for growth!! I failed at my (first) Marathon in October.  How?  By not researching the correct shoes… because of this SIMPLE thing that I did horribly wrong, I had to have my TWO big toenails (yes, both of them) surgically removed this past Tuesday.  They were that injured/damaged.  The Doctor took one look at my poor toes and said “Yep, they’re coming off”.  SO THAT HAPPENED!! But, like I said, room for growth (both metaphorically and physically, lol) my toenails can now grow back healthier and NOT injured, and I now know what NOT to do for marathon number 2!! 🙂

5. I TURN 30 IN A LITTLE OVER A MONTH!!!! phew… ok… I’m both excited and petrified to turn Thirty.  I’m not really sure why, so please don’t ask me.  I’m still asking myself.  lol.  I do know that I’m excited to be entering a new year of life.  Also!! I’m hoping, and praying that my thirties are a bit less harsh then my twenties. I’ve heard good things about the thirties, so here we go!!! 🙂

#FridayFive {Winter Fitness Activities} w/ @EatPrayRunDC, @Marmaone1 and @YouSignedUp

Its the time again!!! FRIDAY BABY!!! woot!!!! Goodness I love Fridays!!! 🙂 So today, likeI do every Friday, I’m linking up with the DC Trifecta for the Friday Five; CourtneyCynthia and Mar.  today we’re talking about our favorite winter fitness activities!!!

1. Running – could have guessed right? ha! Yes well, I’m a runner, all year round. And since I’ve chosen my second marathon (w00t) with a late March date, I’ll be running ALL winter long!! So, yea. WINTER RUNNING FTW!!

2. Trees!! – say what? Ok… so last friday we’ hadn’t obtained our tree yet.  On Saturday we went to a nursery about an hour away from our house and we found it! The perfect little tree!! My boyfriend cut it down, but I dragged that sucked for a little bit. That’s a bit of a work out for tiny little nothing arms like mine! (yea I know… work more then your legs stace) And then when it came to decorating… I’m QUITE short… so reaching all the way to the top.. yea… not an easy task. Anywho, it’s gorgeous and I promise (at some point) I’ll post a picture!

3.  Ice skating – I haven’t been ice skating in an outdoor rink in WAY too long, but it is ridiculously fun and a great way to exercise while enjoying yourself.  Try it!! 🙂

4.  Building Snow people – Again I go back to the fact that I have NO measurable upper body strength… and I know this. So, building BIG ASS BALLS (giggle) of snow is difficult!! It’s very very fun, but you work out your upper body quite a bit building those guys, especially if you make them as big as your son wants you to! (he’s a champ!)

5.  Shoveling – ok snow bunnies… If you get more than 20″ of snow a year, you feel me.  WORK WORK WORK IT!!! Shoveling is a WHOLE BODY WORK OUT.  Oh my goodness do you feel it when you’re done!! I’m one of those weird people that LOVE shoveling.  I love to see the work I’ve done, and then jumping in the HUGE pile I’ve made.  I also (weird again) love the soreness I feel from shoveling. I know I’ve used muscles in my body that rarely (if ever) get used.

It’s Friday!!! (Yes, I’m a bit excited…) I love the weekends!

1. Christmas Music – I’m VERY particular about what type of music I like however… sooo if the WRONG type of carol comes on…

2. Decorations – Everyone is getting their trees (not me yet) and decorating their homes. It warm and inviting… which is an EPIC contrast from the frigid temps outside!! 🙂

3. Hot tea – Yea, I know this is a constant favorite, but I’m still a bit under the weather, so it’s going to CONTINUE to be a favorite until I kick this sickness in the butt! (and maybe past that!)

4. Presents –  I haven’t done a tons of shopping, but my mind has figured out what everyone will get and I think that’s the most difficult part sometimes!!! So, YAY!!!

5. NEXT YEARS RACE SCHEDULE –  you didn’t really think I could go a whole post without talking about running did you?? (ha) This week I’ve been dreaming about 2015 and how many BIG races I can afford to run.  It’s pretty exciting!!! 🙂

IT’S FRIDAY!!! And, it’s FRICKEN FREEZING!!!!!! Which brings me right into todays’ Friday Five topic…

COLD WEATHER RUNNING TIPS!! 

As I do every week, I’m linking up with the DC Trifecta, Cynthia, Courtney, and Mar… and we’re talking about things that are becoming more and more important to me as it becomes colder and colder outside.  So, here we go!!

1.  COLD WEATHER GEAR!! Bundle, but don’t over bundle! (say what??)  Yea, I know that’s a bit confusing… I actually saw this amazing “weather guide” thing on twitter yesterday that I NEED to share… It’s a bit blurry, but it’s awesome!! I’m also providing the link to the original tweet, because the picture isn’t of very good quality.

2. GET UNDRESSED FAST!!  Keeping with clothes for a second, you need to GET OUT of your running gear as soon as (or pretty fricken soon after) you get back from your run.  If you’re anything like me, your body will be red and blotchy… (nice look right??) Get in a warm shower/bath (dealers choice) and then put on warm, DRY clothing.  Trust me, your body will thank you.

3.  SHOES!  Have you checked the traction on your shoes?? They may be worn out from hitting the pavement all spring and summer long.  First time smacking the ice, and BAM… those shoes wont be the only thing hitting.  Depending on where you’re running, you may want to look at trail shoes (especially if you live in wooded areas – lucky!! bet its gorgeous with all the snow!!) or at least shoes with better, newer treads.

4.  WARM UP!! (no pun intended) It’s cold… your body is probably throwing profanities at you to begin with for being outside… don’t go from 0-10 out of no where!  Take it easy, work up to your desired speed.  Less risk of injury that way.  🙂

5.  PAY ATTENTION!!!  Surroundings, below your feet, above your head (icicles)… be aware.  Ice hurts… in all forms.  Falling on it, it falling on you… no good.  Snow mounds… look harmless enough right? Yea, until some little shit comes out and scares the bejesus out of you at 9pm.  (yes, this has happened to me and I all but decked him)… BE AWARE!!!

It’s that time of year!!  I’m currently in my cubicle listening to Christmas Music… however it’s not that cheesy crappy stuff don’t worry, it’s nice, classy stuff. (I know people just snorted and said Chrismas music is Christmas music!” and that’s ok!!)  So.. It’s time for the Friday five!!! Today’s theme is how to stay on track during the holiday season (which lets face it, isn’t always easy)!!  As per the usual, I’m linking up with my girls from the DC Trifecta, CourtneyCynthia and Mar.  Here we go!!!

1.  Pack your food for the day!  This is the time of year where (at least at my job) people are CONSTANTLY bringing in goodies… and of course they aren’t the kind that I should be snacking on.  You know exactly what I’m talking about too… cookies, cakes, pumpkin rolls (kill me now), girl scout cookies, pies, you name it – if it has sugar, its coming into my office!! If you pack stuff that you enjoy (for me it’s almonds, raisins, apples, and LOTS of Green Tea) you’re less tempted to reach for that yummy but EMPTY calorie stuff.

2.  FUN RUNS!!! God bless the turkey trot, lol.  No really.  My father and I have signed up for at least 4 “themed” runs from now until the new year.  These are going to save us (as both of us like to eat).  Solstice 8k, Turkey Trot, Zoo Zoom 8K (I think this is themed?) and a Color run… which is just fun, lol.  There’s another one that I can’t think of right now, but that’s not really important.  The message here is RUN!!

3.  Keep moving.  Yes, it’s getting colder, however, for me that makes me want to move my tushy faster.  I’m making it a goal to get to one if not both of my November Project workouts every.single.week.  No excuses.  The food isn’t going to stop… so I’m not going to stop… moving that is.

4. Indulge… A LITTLE! I know I mentioned staying away from sugar, however if you completely deprive yourself, you will end up FREAKING out and EATING ALL THE THINGS!!!! This is the complete opposite of what you want to happen.  Ok, grab ONE cookie… just don’t scarf down the ENTIRE plate!! K? 🙂

5.  Don’t sleep just because you’re bored… I’ve been known to do this… especially because it’s getting dark at… I don’t know.. NOON now? *eye roll* But really, don’t over sleep.  It actually causes you to be MORE tired.  Try to get an indoor routine down that keeps you active, yet safe. 🙂 (win win!!)
